to Burma to enter the service of the Burma Company, Ltd., which had been started seven years previously by a syndicate of French and Swiss bankers. At first he was placed in charge of the banking department, but later on he took charge of the firmas import branch. Unfortunately the syndicate embarked upon disastrous forest operations, and three years after Mr. Hannayas arrival it was necessary to wind up its affairs. Mr. Hannay then joined the firm of Messrs. Gillanders, Arbuthnot e Co. in their Rangoon office, and remained in their employ for five and a half years. Mr. Hannay always took an interest in journalism, and may rightly be accounted the founder of the Burmese vernacular Press.
D. DOMINIC e CO.
This firm of stevedores and purveyors was established in 1894. The proprietor, Mr.
Rangoon, has made a great advance of recent years. With one branch at Mandalay, in
1893, the agency sold less than four hundred sewing machines. In the following year, after Mr. Jehangir D. Contractor, who joined the company in Delhi in 1887, had taken over the management, about 450 machines were sold. From that time the number has risen rapidly, and to cope with the increasing demands branches have been opened from time to time in every important town in the province. In 1908 the total sale of these machines reached 4,500. The credit for this in mainly due to the enterprise and activity of Mr. N. M. Patell, chief agent at Bombay, and of Mr. Contractor, the local agent.

Domenico De Moro, of Genoa, came to Rangoon in 1877, and found employment with Capt. Avelino, stevedore, Messrs. Steel Bros. e Co., and various other firms, until he decided to start business on his own account. He now acts as stevedore for the Hansa and Austrian Lloyd liners, and for the last seven years 45 per cent, of the cargo steamers calling at the port have been loaded by him.

The Burma agency of Singeras Manufacturing Company, the headquarters of which are in
Wales by the city of Rangoon on the occasion of the visit which their Royal Highnesses paid to Burma, was designed and manufactured by Messrs. P. Orr e Sons, whose services have been utilised for similar purposes on many notable occasions. The local branch of this Madras firm of European jewellers, gold and silversmiths, and dealers in precious stones, was first opened in 1899 at premises in Barr Street, but, the ground being shortly afterwards acquired by the Government to serve as the site of the new Law Courts, they removed to their present commodious premises in Sulay Pagoda Road, which were specially erected for them in 1900.
