A curious contrivanceaa rice-pounder driven by waterawas witnessed by us here for the first time. Several of them, very rude contrivances, were found near every village after this. They are constructed of a log of wood, some 10 feet in length and i foot broad, with a striker at one end. works on a pivot in the centre.
