ON THE RIVER.
The bamboos grew in marvellous profusion, weaving themselves, in parts, into a dense, green wall, while the tamarind, mango, Ficus Religiosa, interspersed with the gorgeous crimson of the Butea Frondosa (or Dak), with occasional Bombax Mala-baricum or silk tree, produced an amazing study of colour.

We spent the whole afternoon of the 25th in that delightful third defile. Each fresh reach of tl^e river that was disclosed seemed more fascinating than the preceding one. Long stretches of blue, limpid water wandered away, and the brilliant foliage on the banks strayed down to the water's edge and peeped over, as if to gaze at their delicate, wistful reflections in the clear, glittering depths.
