Tha-pan-bin ... 4 On tbe 8th the boat reached Tha-pan-bin. From tjj* point the river begins to narrow, and the r0rL gorge continues to below Myintha. The current tremendous, and the water forms into whirlpools^ tween the large rocks that stand up in thenar*A* channel. It is said that in the rains no boat row up against the current. This is what is called first defile of the Irrawaddy "g which, according to Dr. Anderson, varies in from 1,000 to 70 yards. The same writer JJJ describes it : " This portion of the river commefljjJJ a few miles above Bhamo and extends for 25 nearly to Tsmbo. Between these points the j^j flows under high wooded banks. At the lower entfAg the channel is 1,000 yards wide and narrows to 600, 200 and even 70 as the parallel ^CJ approach each other. As we ascended the hills higher and more abruptly." The inhabitants on banks are chiefly Poons, living in about a dozen iW* from Tha-pan-bin to Pagan.
