A NATURALIST IN BORNEO
Hemiptera :
Coreid 2 species Ectatops rubiaceus
Reduviidce 1 ,r Serinetha abdominalis
Lepidoptera :
Zygnid 1 species Phauda limbata *
Several insects, red, orange, or yellow in colour, with black spots, exhibit another type of coloration known as the Coccinelliform pattern, since the Ladybirds, or Coccinellid, constitute the central dominant models copied by other insects. The Vespiform p^* tern, dark with bright yellow bands, is another corn* mon type of insect coloration, and attention has already been drawn to the black, white-tipped colouring of the group converging on Melipona. But enough has been said to show that those who seek to demolish the theory of mimicry as due to natural selection have * very difficult task before them.
* This species is underlined in Mr. Shelford's manuscript, ^ I think, accidentally ; for the Zygnid have all the characteristicA of a distasteful group. Furthermore, Mr. Shelford has indicateA his belief that the species is a Miillerian mimic in P.Z.S., 1902f I**' p. 369. This memoir, pp. 230-84, and the accompanying colour^ Plates, XIX-XXIII, should be consulted in connection with present chapter.aE. B.
