The Lick Observatory is a very fine building, or series of buildings, the principal part having a large entrance-hall and two wings. At the end of one is the large dome, containing the big telescope ; at the other end is a smaller observatory. The great white dome forms a conspicuous landmark, and can even be seen from San Jos. observatory was that a peculiar old man, James Lick, who had been a piano-maker, but had made a large fortune, thought one day that the United States, possessing most big things, ought to have the largest telescope in the worldanot that he knew or cared anything about astronomyaso he left a large sum of money (700,000 dollars) to be devoted to this object.
