WHEN DHWEY CAME.
The American fleet, under Admiral Dewey, destroyed the Spanish fleet at Cavite on May I,
1898, and blockaded Manila until August 13th, when military forces having arrived, the city was taken possession of. For two years previous to that time the Filipinos had been in revolt against Spain, under the dictatorship of Agui-naldo. A few months after the American1occupation, in February,
1899, Aguinaldo and his followers commenced an insurrection against the United States authorities. Troops to the number of 60,000 were sent here, with the result that the insurgent army was soon broken up and peace restored, although numerous bands of so-called ladrones still roam about under the name of "insurrectos,"

the roads get into a very bad condition. The maximum annual rainfall recorded is 114 inches, and the minimum 84 inches. The maximum of the thermometer is about 920; but a cool sea breeze sets in at night, reducing the heat to an endurable temperature for sleeping.
