4 Michelborne, when he arrived in the East, instead of trying to find new ports for trade, appears to haye followed the pernicious example of the Portuguese in plundering the native traders among the islands of the
archipelago. By this means he secured great booty, but brought great disgrace on the British name, and thus hindered the Company's business at Bantam.
