The Railways in Java are two kinds namely the ordinary railways and the lighter ones (tramways). The ordinary railways cover three fifth of the total, the rest being lighter railways or steamtrams. From Batavia two lines of the State Railways lead to Bandoeng. One goes via Buitenzorg a Soeka-boemi, the other via Tjikampek a Poerwakarta. Both lines come together at the junction Padala-rang, 12 miles before reaching Bandoeng.
The main line of the State Railways runs from Batavia to Sourabaya via Cheribon a Djokja. Starting from Batavia it runs from the junction Tjikampek to the North East fill Cheribon and from there via Proepoek and the junction Kroja to djokja and on to Sourabaya. Only near Proepoek a hilly country is gone through, the other part of the line runs through a flat country with no heights worth speaking of. This line will in the near future form the one day connection between Batavia and Sourabava.
The Southern route leaves the main line at the junction Tjikampek to pas through a mountainous country on to Bandoeng. It proceeds from there via Tjibatoe (from which station a branch line leads to Garoet)aTasik Malaya a Bandjar a (connecting there with the tram line to Wonosobo)
to the junction Kroja where it joins the main line to Djokja and Sourabaya.
The last named route is the one which for Tourists is of the most interest as it passes through a perfectly wonderful tropical country.
At present it takes a day and half to go fron: Batavia to Sourabaya and one night must be spent either in Cheribon, Bandoeng, Garoet or Djokja.
For technical reasons no night trains are run in Java.
The service of the express and fast trains which run between Batavia a Cheribon a Djokja a Sourabaya and Batavia a Bandoeng a Garoet a Djokja a Sourabaya is most efficient and excellent in every respect. The carriages run in these trains are very comfortable and equipped with fans and other modern installations, whilst screens prevent the entering of dust and soot, at the same time not .hutting of the air. In every one of those trains a restaurant car is run, which extends its service through ill the compartiments and every thing possible is lone to ensure the traveller a comfortable voyage.
