SOME MOUNTAIN ASCENTS
This mountain is found in the residency Ke-doe and its highest summit has an elevation of 10945 feet. The ascent is made as follows: From Parakan (Paraan), the terminal of the tramline from Djokja and Willem I belonging to the Netherlands Indian Railway Company to that place, on tooi or on horseback to the moun-tain-hut of the forest department at Kalipatjar (permision to stay in the hut to be asked for to the forest officer (houtvester) at Magelang) in about 5 hours. Coolies for the ascent must be engaged at the native villages Katjepit or Petir-goenoeng on the way.
From Kalipatjar to the top of the mountain in about 7 hours. On the summit are a sand sea, some active solfatara and the grave of Kiai Me-koekoean, whilst a glorious view is had over the surrounding country. Coolies 75 cents a day.
Is the mountain next to the Soembing and also situated in the residency Kedoe. Its highest top
is 10318 feet a.s. Like the ascent of Mount Soembing one also has to start for this ascent from Parakan.
On foot or on horseback to the mountain hut of the forest department at Kalidatar (permission to stay there to be asked for to the ahout-vestera at Magelang) in about 3y2 hours. Coolies to make the ascent to be engaged through the mandoer (head-boy) of the forest department at Kalidatar, if possible people from one of the highest situated villages in the vicinity. From Kalidatar to the summit in about 7 hours on foot. On the top is a large, extinguished crater.
Coolies to be paid 75 cents a day.
It is also possible to make the ascent of the two afore mentioned mountains from the Government resthouse at Kledoeng (4500* a.s.) which is situated on the saddle between the mountains, some 8 miles from Parakan which place may be reached by trap or motor car.
Permission to stay in the resthouse to be asked for to the Assistant-Resident at Temanggoeng. From the resthouse at Kledoeng it is a stiff climb of about 7 hours to either of the two mountains.
