ure. European houses are found in all parts of *he town. There are many Chinese shops and native artisans. The main road aResidency Avenuea is wide and planted with fig and banyan trees. On this road is situated the mansion of the resident, and the Clubhouse. In the spacious garden in front of the Residentas mansion are many sculptured images found in the vicinity of Djokja.
The dress of the native women generally is dark coloured giving a sombre aspect and a striking contrast with the one worn in West-Java, which is much more gay by its colours. In the vicini'ty of the city are found many Bud-dhististic remains. The visitor wel may spend here some days to see all objects of interest.
Places of interest.
The sultan's enclosure (kraton). The enclosure is situated in the centre of the city and is surrounded by a wall 12 ft high, 15 wide and 4 m. broad. The number of inhabitants within the wall, most of these relatives of the sultan with their families, is said to be about 15000.
Those who want to visit the palace must obtain permission from the Resident and are
shown around by an official guide, to whom as a rule a tip is given. The kraton is only open to visitors on Fridays.
The Watercastle (Taman Sari). It is the palace where in olden times the sultan went for recreation. This palace lies to the W. of the residential palace of the Sultan and is reached from the hotel in about 20 minutes.
Batik: Javanese batik is famous all over the world for the quaint beauty of its design the durable quality of its colour. Djokja, Solo Pekalongan and other cities are the centres of this industry. Visitors wishing to purchase batik are advised to go to the permanent exhibition of native arts and craft on the Toegoe Road.
The ruins of Prambanan are situated about one mile from the Brambanan station, the fourth station on the route from Djokja to Solo. (The distance from Djokja is 10 miles, about y2 houras ride by motor). Three hours will be sufficient to allow for the journey both ways and a visit to the ruins, when going there by motor car.
