passes Lampegan near which is a tunnel, connecting the plain of Soekaboemi with that of Tjiandjoer. Tjiandjoer is a small town 1900 ft. above sea level.
The town (88 m. from Batavia) is the old capital of Preanger residency and has a population of some 1700 but it offers no special objects of interest for tourists.
(Side trip) Sindanglaya is a health resort situated 18 m. from Buitenzorg and 13 m. N. W. of Tjiandjoer, It can be reached from either of the two, but the road from Buitenzorg is rather steep. Therefor it is advisable to go there from Tjiandjoer from which place it can be reached in about 1 y2 hours by carriage, or by motor car in % of an hour.
Postoffice. There is an auxiliary office about twenty minuteas walk from the hotel.
Sindanglaya was built in 1864 as a health resort for the soldiers of the Dutch East Indian army.
Situated at an elevation of 3500 feet it is a cool, healthy spot. Its surroundings are beautiful; towards the S. W. rises Mt Gedeh and
beyond it the still higher Mt Pangerango. In the vicinity are various interesting spots. It is one of the mountain resorts frequented most by residents of Batavia.
Excursions from Sindanglaya:
To Telaga Wama and Poentjak Pass, by trap or motor car to the Poentjak and thence on foot to Telaga Warna (a beautiful crater lake).
To Tjipanas. The country seat of the Governor-General is situated at this place. It is not very far from Sindanglaya and one can easily walk the distance. The road leads past a small mountain lake, called Tjisaroea, where boating and swimming may be had.
To Tjibodas, known for its mountain garden which forms part of the Botanical Garden of Buitenzorg. The garden was laid out in 1866.
Goenoeng Kasoer, (Breakfast Hill), a lovely spot which is the place where a former Governor-General used to take breakfast. It may be reached from the Hotel in one hour on foot but horseback or sedan chair can also be taken.
