The sanitary conditions in Java are of a most satisfactory kind. Not only that the Civil Medical Service by whom the equipment and regulations are controlled keeps up a very efficient service, but its medical staff consists of very eminent me-dici and surgeons.
Furthermore in the larger places a good many excellent hospitals are found which all have a very competent staff of nurses whilst the patients can choose their own physician. In the military hospitals, which are well known for their liberal treatment of both Europeans and natives, private patients are taken in at a low charge, but only provided there is room, whilst the doctors practising there are always of the Royal Army Medical Corps.
Every qualified medical man in Netherlands-India speaks, besides Dutch and Malay, the three modern languages, French, English and German so that patients of foreign nationality can always make themselves understood.
