For ornaments they wear a number of necklaces made of silver or grass and rattan, which are very becoming on the brown skin, especially those made of grass, which, when fresh, have a beautiful golden hue.
I was much struck with their large silver earrings,
and endeavoured to bargain with one of them for a pair; but, like dutiful wives, they refused to part with them without the consent of their husbands.
Later in the afternoon the men came, headed by their chief, a good-looking man, with a tiny moustache carefully waxed at the ends ! Their dress consisted of a short, tight-fitting jacket of black cloth, similar to that worn by the women, and wide short trousers of the same material. They were not tattooed as a rule, but one or two of them had a small representation of an animal on the thighs. They said they had never before seen a farang, and were as much interested in me as I in them, putting all sorts of curious questions to me, but, as the Mussu language is entirely distinct from that of the Laosians, the conversation had to be carried on through the double intermediation of the Chow and of Kao, and it consequently lost much of its effect.
