Domestic Trade. It is no exaggeration to say that the practical control of the domestic trade of the Philippines rests with the Chinese. Long before the coming of the Spaniards to these islands, the Chinese were already there on the spot. It is on the basis of these long-standinghistorical connections that they "have established their present commercial supremacy. Some 33,000 Chinese now live scattered throughout the Islands, at every spot of any importance, and the network of their commercial connections gives them a power no other people can ignore. Most of them are petty traders, but not a few are possessed of a large capital and pay in the form of import duties alone several hundred thousand pesos annually.
