Yun-nan City (761 km.).
Arrival. After about 10 hours' run through a wild mountainous country, the train arrives at the N. terminus of the Yun-nan Railway, i.e. at Faubourg du Sud, a S. section, outside the walls, of Yun-nan City.
Conveyances : palanquins usually borne by two men, tariff, 60-70 cents each per day ; horses, 50-70 cents per day.
Hotels: HA tel de la Gare (3 min. walk from Station), beds 18 room, $1a 2, breakfast, 50 cents, midday and evening meals, $1,50 each; American plan, $4-5 per diem. HA tel Terminus (10 min. walk from Station),a American plan $4-5 per diem.
General Description of the City. Xun-nan-fu 31 M Hf (probably the Yachia in Carajana of Marco Polo), the capital of the province of Yun-nan, is in 25A 6' N. lat. and I02A 52' E. long., and 5 km. N.E. of a large lake called Tien-tche-hou. It is built 011 a high plain, 1,900 metres above the sea-level. From the city highways radiate in various directions, furnishing busy routes of traffiic, and three or four streets in the city which, constitute the business quarter always present a lively scene. The city was thrown open to foreign trade in 1908, in accordance with the supplementary convention to the Franco-Chinese treaty of 1887. The inner city is surrounded by walls, which are pierced by six gates : East Gate (Nien-IIo-men), Small East Gate (Fou-Tso-men), North Gate (lvong-Tchen-men), West Gate (Pao-Tcheng-men), Small West Gate (Kang-Feou-men), and South Gate (Li-Tcheng-men). The chief products of this region are rice and other cereals, bamboos, ebony, salt, skins, jade, copper, iron, cattle, sheep, etc.
